Do you love that creamy blob foam on top of your cappuccino? That is why you often visit the coffee shop. However, you can make such beverages at home without having to spend a lot. You do not even have to invest in fancy equipment and machines.

What you will need:

  • 2% fat milk on non-fat milk
  • A jar with a lid
  • Microwave

How does frothing milk with a frother work?

When making milk foam using a microwave, you will go through a two-step process. First, shake the milk in a jar to make foam. Second, microwave the milk for some seconds to stabilize the foam.

Microwaving your milk helps to stabilize the foam, if you fail to use the microwave, the foam will collapse shortly. Plus microwaving your milk will warm it before pouring it into your coffee.

Why use 2% fat or nonfat milk

Low-fat milk is generally great for frothing. Milk that are fortified with additional proteins – always reduces fat and skim kinds of milk are usually easily foamed.

How to use the milk foam

After stabilizing the milk in the microwave, the milk foam will be thick enough that you simply spoon it into the coffee mug. In case, you require some milk in your coffee; you can simply hold the back the foam and let the milk pour into the coffee. You will be a few steps to being your own barista.

Pour your milk into the jar

You can fill the jar with the volume of milk that you require or that you usually use for your coffee. However, you should not pour more than halfway full to leave some room to make foam.

Steps of frothing your milk without a Frother

Step 1: Pour your milk into a jar

Pour the milk into the jar to halfway full. You may also pour the milk into the volume that you typically use for your milk. However, you should leave some room to allow for the foam to form. If you fill the jar fully, it will not foam.

Step 2: Carefully shake the jar containing milk

Before you shake the jar ensure to screw on the lid; this will prevent the milk from spilling during the shaking process. Now shake the jar vigorously until the milk is frothy and has double in volume.

You may have to shake the milk for about 30 to 60 seconds before you achieve your desired foam. If you are not sure of the shaking time, you can open the lid and check if the milk has frothed perfectly.

Step 3: Microwave the milk for about 30 seconds

Once your milk has frothed, take the lid off. Place the jar in the microwave for approximately 30 seconds. The microwaving process will cause the foam to rise to the top of the milk.

The heat produced by the microwave will help to stabilize the foam. As noted earlier, if you fail to microwave the milk, the foam will fall shortly.

Step 4: Place the foam onto your coffee

This step is the most interesting in using the foamed froth. Simply pour the warm milk into your coffee if you desire and then spoon the milk foam on top of the coffee.

Alternatively, you can just spoon the foam on top of your coffee without letting milk in or just allow a small amount of milk to enter in your coffee.

Flavoring Your Beverage

You can use this method for a latte or cappuccino. You may want to flavor the drink with your favorite syrup or even add some sweeteners. Simply place your desired sweetener or flavoring syrup into the cup of your milk before foaming the milk.

If you want to enjoy a flavored or sweet beverage, you can add vanilla, maple, or almond extract to your milk to your hot milk. You can be creative and add other spices to make your drink tastier and unique. Adding cocoa powder, chocolate chips or caramel syrup will reveal your creativity and make you your own barista.
